BLUE ECONOMY

The blue economy is essential to every country and all continents at large, this includes all various activities that are carried out within the ocean i.e. Renewable energy, seabed extractive and so much more, but as we all carry these activities, in one or two ways we contaminate the ocean with unwanted substances unknowingly.

As it is estimated globally recently over 1 billion people still live under abject poverty and this is a very alarming number, we should make human needs sustainable by utilizing the resources within our environment. below are instances of blue economies that can be used to make changes.

              TOURISM

As we look at a major boost of the GDP(Gross domestic product), Tourism has been a boost to the Kenyan economy since has created employment for the youths and the communities within the coast, GDP is usually carried by the national statistical agency following the international standards. Currently, Kenyan GDP stands at 107.00 USD Billion.

FISHERIES

Fisheries and aquaculture also play a role in providing food and nutrition security, however, the inland water has been eroding due to overfishing, climate change and water acidification .fisheries provide approximately 70%-85% of global animal protein.

GAS

It's estimated that 85% of urban dwellers use gas, it's a natural fossil source of energy used in cooking and much more for human benefits, however, the demand is still increasing as this pushes the government to come up with various methods. however Kenya has no major gas production, we contract the U.S.A firms for affordable liquefied petroleum gas to diversify the country's energy mix and to reduce the cost of energy.

The only major heat source we have is oil which was discovered in Turkana the Northern part of Kenya in 2012 by the company called Tullow a UK owned company, the oil is being analysed, its under importation and refining
In the year 2017, the UN claimed the sustainable developments to fully support the countries as to achieve the 2030 agenda.

EFFECTS OF BLUE ECONOMY.

We have discovered lots of benefits that sustain our needs through the blue economy, on the other hand, we also have the demerits.
The discharge of remnant substances to the sea might be "poison" to the marine species and eventually, lead to their death.

Ocean acidification is caused by human activities, it reduces carbonate the major building block in seawaters hence the water becomes more acidic, when this happens it affects marine organisms such as coral hence cant form its shell and skeleton.

Overfishing also reduces the number of fish in the water bodies, this is due to the demand when too many fish are taken out of the water bodies it brings imbalance of marine species, and this might lead to the growth of algae which may result in lack of oxygen and at the end leads to lack of water species .i.e sea turtle.
In conclusion, we need to balance and protect both sides for beneficial human and Marine creatures.
